The history of The Church of St. Michael & St. George is as interesting as it’s architecture. It dates back to 1845 when St. George’s Episcopal Church was founded in St. Louis. In 1913, another church called The Church of St. Michael and All Angels was organized in Clayton. These two churches merged in 1928 to form The Church of Saint Michael & Saint George as it has been known for some 95 years.

The Gothic Revival architectural style features all the traditional accoutrements including a stone exterior, a slate roof, and a tower with a spire. The interior reveals a nave, a transept, and a chancel featuring stained glass windows, carved woodwork, marble floors, and an organ with some 5,000 pipes.

Discretely hidden within its confines can be found three HD pan/tilt/zoom cameras, sixteen channels of digital audio, Dan Dugan automated mixing, eight channels of digital wireless and a state-of-the-art artificial reverb system. However, despite all this technology something was missing.

An important aspect of the church’s liturgy each week includes a processional of the clergy followed by a beautiful choir. The church wished to capture and convey the aural ambiance of the worship experience for the benefit of the remote viewers of their live video stream.

Toward that end, a microphone array consisting of six micro shotgun microphones were strategically configured to capture the vocalist as they processed down the center isle. The audio from the array was then routed to an audio matrix setup exclusively for the video mix and controlled via a touch control app on a wireless tablet.
